How to rename tags in Google Reader

[This is an updated version of a Googlified post for August 2008. Full credit goes to him as the original author.]

The Problem: you would like to rename one of your many Google Reader tags/folders, but Google Reader does not directly allow this.

The Solution!
  1. Open Google Reader
  2. Open the Settings page of Google Reader, then go to the Subscriptions tab.
  3. Enter the name of the existing tag you wish to change in the input field called “Filter by name, tag, or URL” (top right)
  4. Click Select: All -X- subscriptions (top left)
  5. On one of the subscriptions, use the menu called “Change folders...” to create the new tag (renamed version of existing). This is done by clicking on New Folder...
  6. In the “More actions…” menu at the top of the page, choose the new tag under “Add tag…”. This will add the new tag to all selected subscriptions.

  7. In the “More actions…” menu, look under “Remove tag…” and select the old tag to remove it from all selected subscriptions.
  8. Done!
This is not too hard to do and it's not something you will do that often, so maybe Google chose to leave out the rename feature (even though it exists in Gmail labels) to keep things simple.

Thanks again to Haochi.
